I recently got a tour of the new event venue opening soon in Chickasha called 611 The Gathering. The renovation of this building has been going on now for over a year, but taking the extra time looks like it will pay off. It’s located at 611 Chickasha avenue in a historic building and it is sure to be in high demand for wedding receptions, proms and other special events. But the story of how it came about is even more special that their event space.
The couple that purchased the old Chickasha School Bus Barn had a different vision in mind when they first toured it a couple of years ago. Instead of an old building built in the 1920’s that needed a lot of improvements, they saw the potential to create an incredible event venue. They did some research and discovered that the demand for this type of venue exceeded the options that we had available. Their story though is much deeper than a simple business transaction!
David Da Silva and his wife Nathaly, live in the Dallas area, but dreamed of opening up their own event venue. They did research online and looked at several different locations in Texas and Oklahoma, until they found what they were looking for in Chickasha Oklahoma! After the tour of the facility this week, I asked Nathaly what I ask all new businesses: Why Chickasha? She smiled and said that they fell in love with the building, the people and the town. She felt that her faith was sending her a message that this would become “home.” She told me the story of how wonderful the building owner, Joe Hutmacher was when he first showed them the building. Her and her husband felt a kindness from Joe that can only be found in small town America. That small town charm and friendliness is what sold them on investing in our Community.
Many of you that read this know Joe Hutmacher. You know how he was a BIG part of getting the Festival of Light started and volunteered countless hours to help make it successful. Many of you may also know that Joe was good friends with Noland James, who claimed in his obituary that he created the Leg Lamp prop that was used in the movie “A Christmas Story.”
I was questioned on one of the social media pages last week for posting a link from “Chickasaw Country” that declared Chickasha as the official Christmas Town! Once the negative comments started flowing, I didn’t bother to respond anymore. I didn’t even mention that we had just received a State Tourism award for best marketing campaign for Christmas Town. Instead I would rather spend my time talking with small business owners that can see that spirit of Christmas year around right here in Chickasha.
In 1897 eight year old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote to the New York Sun newspaper and asked if Santa Claus was real, the paper wrote back the famous line “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” For any non-believers here in our town, I want you to know that “Yes, Virginia, Chickasha is Christmas Town” and that’s #TheGoodStuff!
