#TheGoodStuff Why Crystal Springs?
So have you gone to see “Twisters” yet? If you haven’t you are one of the few. It had a HUGE opening weekend at the Box Office grossing over $80 Million, but what I like to see is the impact it had in our Community. According to Facebook posts from the Chief Drive In, they had a record weekend selling out both Friday and Saturday nights and almost a sell out on Sunday. They showed pictures of people waiting in line for hours, just to see Twisters.
Heritage Park Theater hosted a premier party on Thursday night and then sold out every night afterwards, even Monday night! With the popularity of all the streaming services, it is wonderful news to see that our local movie theaters have experienced booming business thanks to “Twisters.” For those of you that haven’t seen it yet, please get out enjoy an incredible movie. For those of you that have, go see it again. Be on the lookout for Crystal Springs and you will see the iconic neighborhood bar from the ole days of Chickasha, The Wandora.
So why did they use the name Crystal Springs instead of Chickasha? Great question and here’s the answer I got when I asked it last fall when I noticed ambulances on the set that said “Crystal Springs” rather than Chickasha. (Spoiler alert: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, quit reading.) I was told that the scene shot here in Chickasha in the 17th and Minnesota area was a pivotal part of the movie. After seeing the movie, I understand more. Crystal Springs was devastated by the Tornado, more so than the other towns that were hit by a tornado. They didn’t want people to think that the real town of Chickasha had been devastated, so they used Crystal Springs.
Downtown OKC was featured, but referred to as New York. The Stillwater Rodeo was filmed in Midwest City. Sometimes things don’t always make sense as movies are being filmed, but this much I do know… Our local movie theaters have had challenging times since Covid. A few good days, but a lot more when it’s been tough to stay open. A Hollywood Blockbuster that had a scene filmed in our town may be just what our Theaters needed. Go see Twisters and buy some popcorn and a coke. Let’s keep supporting our local businesses so that they can stay around in case there is another Twisters and maybe next time we will see the Chickasha sign in the movie, that would definitely be #TheGoodStuff!
